Catastrophe Serial Numbers

When a disaster strikes, the PCS-CanadaTM Service investigates to determine whether the damage will meet the definition of a catastrophe. The service now defines catastrophes as events that cause C$25 million or more in direct insured losses to property and that affect a significant number of policyholders and insurers.

For each catastrophe, the PCS-Canada Service assigns a serial number recognized throughout the insurance industry. That number lets insurers track losses and reserves related to a single, discrete event.

Under many reinsurance contracts, the serial number is important for determining which losses will trigger reinsurance coverage. Our long-standing reputation for defining and accurately tracking catastrophes reduces disputes between primary insurers and reinsurers. That saves the industry millions of dollars a year in staff and legal expenses.
